My Approach to Therapy
My approach to therapy is broad-based and holistic, incorporating the training and experience I have gained over many years. I use evidence-based approaches that are adapted to the needs of the individual, remaining open to the need for creativity and inspiration. Every person has a story to tell, and a key part of my work is to listen and understand. In working with children, the story is often told through the language they know best: play.
For Christians:
I believe that all healing comes from God, through the power of the Holy Spirit. My role as therapist is to create an environment in which truth is exposed so that change can occur. If the atmosphere is right, and the patient is willing, changes will happen and healing will take place.
The first step is for us, together, to assess the problem and determine the need. Next, we will set goals that are achievable within the context of psychotherapy. Goals may include reduction of anxiety, relief from depression, healing from trauma, or improvement in other areas of mental health.
Specific clinical approaches will depend upon the needs of the individual. I have found that the concepts in Cognitive Therapy are useful in recovery from most mental health problems; but other approaches may be just as helpful or more so. For Christians, praying in session can help create a healing environment and bring to light the truths that will lead to growth and recovery. Exploration of blockages to faith can also yield positive results. My approach is non-directive: I will not tell you what to believe, about your life or your God, but I will help you to find for yourself what is true and right.
For those who don't profess Christian beliefs:
I welcome all who seek relief from psychological distress, Christian or non. For non-Christians, we will use mainstream approaches, such as narrative therapy, cognitive therapy, trauma-informed treatment, or other strategies that are best suited to your particular situation. The work begins with an assessment of needs and the setting of goals. From there, we will take an approach that fits you best.
"So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Services
Individual Therapy
Marriage Counseling
Family Therapy
Treatment for individuals seeking help with anxiety, depression, recovery from trauma, or other mental health problems. I work with people aged 5 through 100 (or more!)
Couples who participate in marriage counseling will learn the skills they need to improve their relationship. Skills will be practiced in session before being used at home.
Ideally, this will include all household members, even those who don't think they have a problem. Participants will gain a greater understanding of roles, rules, relationships, and communication styles.
